The initial client brief for this project was to correct ongoing mold and moisture issues that repeatedly popped up during the summer months and to expand the square footage into a larger second floor. We addressed the moisture issues through mechanical means (improved HVAC systems) as well as architectural methods. When we expanded the second floor and relocated the stairs, we were able to make interesting interior volumes while using the additions to protect exterior doors, which helps to prevent water intrusion. The upstairs addition included the addition of two new bathrooms and bedrooms.
Often in a project, there is a practical problem to solve. In this case, it was a mold issue. Our goal is to address the underlying issue while solving the problem in an elegant way.
